Sensory Tools For Little Learners With Big Feelings

My Students

My students are inquisitive and enjoy learning! My students love reading and math and are learning to become writers. They benefit from movement, hands-on activities, and books at their independent reading levels. My students are in kindergarten, first, and second grade so have had a challenging start to learning.

My classroom is a safe and healthy learning space that fosters respect, productive struggle, and academic risk.

My students receive services because of learning challenges related to Developmental Delays, ADHD, Learning Disabilities, Dyslexia, Autism, and Emotional Disabilities. I also teach students without disabilities who require intervention. As a special education teacher, my hope is to make learning as fun and engaging as possible!

My Project

My little learners sometimes have big feelings! When students are overstimulated, angry, sad, or anxious, they need to a safe space to take a break, calm, and process their feelings. My students often require these tools because of difficulties with self-regulation due to anxiety, emotional disabilities, and ADHD. This project includes a variety of tools for expressing emotions (especially when my little ones can't find their words), calming activities, and fidgets to balance frustrations.

Tools to express emotions and a safe space to calm are essential in order to get back to learning.

The stuffed animals are concrete ways to express feelings and to literally turn those feelings from sad/angry to happy. Fidgets and kinetic sand are great tools for calming. It's so important to teach students that their feelings matter so they can learn to manage their frustrations in a positive way.
