My Project

I am one of 3 elementary Life Skills teachers in a high poverty school. All of our students receive free lunch. Our students have a wide range of physical and developmental disabilities including Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, sensory or visual impairment and Autism. These kiddos require all academics to be modified and they access the curriculum through a variety of methods.

We are updating our multi sensory learning area in the school.

Many of our students cannot access recess time due to weather and their disabilities. We have created a sensory room/recess area for the kids in our program to enjoy safely.

Our students have limited vision and need materials that are bright and have contrasting colors. Therapy tunnels, rollers and music are all great ways to stimulate their senses.

The large Flaghouse Roller Tunnel will be a nice way for our students to work on their trunk control and balance. They can sit inside the tunnel or use their hands to push and roll the tunnel. The Sunlin Floor Piano mat is brightly colored and great for our limited vision students. Music is always a favorite with all our students. This floor mat will allow kids to use their feet, hands or wheelchairs to make music. It has 24 keys in all different colors. Our students can work on expressive and receptive color identification while playing on the piano.

The students in the Life Skills program use our Sensory room daily. This room is essential for their development and is a fun and safe place to explore.
