Next year I'll be teaching in the Emotional Disturbance unit. In this classroom I'll be teaching students with emotional and behavioral disorders in grades 6-8. The focus of this classroom is to teach student self-regulation and calm-down techniques. The students in my class strive for excellence. They all inherently care about one another and continually make an effort to improve in all areas. These students are passionate and energetic, but we work to display that passion and energy in an appropriate, positive manor.
There are many difficulties that students with emotional disturbances and behavior disorders face.
Among those are hyperactivity, aggression, self-injurious behaviors, withdrawal, defiance to authority, and learning difficulties. Many students with ED (emotional disturbance) are 1-3 grade levels behind due to these factors that interfere with their learning. In this class, we work to meet those emotional needs, sensory needs, and learn to self-regulate our emotions. The goal of my classroom is to assist students in reaching a point where they are capable of attending general education classes, and only need to come to me for support.
These supplies will help to create a safe, supportive learning environment that will assist my students in achieving success!
My Project
Help me to transform my classroom into an environment that feels safe and conducive to learning for students with Emotional Disturbance! These seating, sensory, and fidget items help provide our students with a way to meat their emotional needs. By having flexible seating options we are allowing students to choose where and how they would like to sit and work, and thus providing our students with the opportunity to take charge of their learning. When students are able to make choices in their learning, they are going to be more engaged and less disruptive to their peers.
Fidgets and sensory items allow appropriate outlets for our students to utilize in their self-regulation of calm-down techniques.
These materials will be used as fidgets for hyperactive students to focus during learning times, but also will be used to assist students in calming down when they begin to have feelings of anger or aggression.
