My Project

My Pre-K and Kindergarten kiddos are super wiggly and school is a brand new world for them. Learning to acclimate is, on its own, a daunting task. For some students, it's more difficult because they may be autistic or have a sensory disorder. Whether they have or have not yet been identified, those students need tools to help them focus, self regulate and learn in the way that is specific to them.

Most rural schools no longer have the funds to provide current textbooks, much less sensory items, timers, visual schedules and incentives to help reduce anxiety so that learning can take place.

Sensory items don't just help those with a specific diagnosis such as autism or sensory disorder, either. All students can benefit from these materials. I would love to be able to provide things for my students that can help them reach their learning potential.

Many children are kinesthetic learners, meaning they learn through different ways such as physical manipulation, touch, movement and sound. Visual schedules help autistic students know what is coming next and helps them to feel less overwhelmed by transitions, classroom noise and group movement. Sensory mats, chew necklaces, alternative seating and fidget toys provide movement for their body so their brains can take in information and retain it. They also provide incentive for completing tasks. Noise cancelling headphones block out the extra noise that causes anxiety. All of these things can be used in a variety of ways to help my students have a successful year!
