Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my classroom are students with varying disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder, emotional impairment, communication delay, and cognitive disabilities. Many of them have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. My school serves students from all over the city of Boston because of our central location, specialized special education component, and small class size. Although my students may have delays, I want them to have the tools and support to be able to do anything!
My Project
In my classroom, many students are learning to identify when their body needs stimulation and how to keep themselves calm and focused on their work. Sensory tools like fidget toys, weighted blankets, seating options, and do-it-yourself slime can help my students be able to do their best work while in the classroom.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given tools that help them to stay focused.
They are more proactive about their education when they know that they will get the things they need to deal with sensory issues appropriately and without distracting their peers.
We are learning to control our bodies and figure out our own emotions and needs. Please help us get the sensory tools we need.
