My Students

"Sensory issues are a serious problem in many, many cases of autism, and they make it impossible to operate in the environment where you're supposed to be social" ~Temple Grandin

This is a great bunch of students.

They are so kind and compassionate. The class is a mix of sixth, seventh and eighth grade severely handicapped students. Many of our special needs students on our campus participate in the general P.E and or art class with support staff. Our middle school does an excellent job of focusing on what our students are good at and making sure each student is set up for success. Many of the students require modifications, accommodations, and adaptations to participate in classwork and or assigned activities. Appropriate social interactions are an important life skill that our sensory seekers often struggle with. Research supports the integration of sensory play as a way to improve daily functional living.

My Project

Many of our students have difficulty processing sensory information such as textures, sounds, smells, tastes, brightness and movement. These difficulties can make ordinary situations feel overwhelming. As such, they can interfere with daily function and sensory integration helps alleviate this overload. Project materials will be utilized in our occupational therapy stations for students with specific sensory input needs. The weighted blankets and lap pads will offer stabilizing weight for our fidgeting students who find it challenging to sit still enough in a chair to complete academic tasks. The bean bags, fidgets, theraputty, hand scooters, spinning boards, gel pads, and sensory bins will all be organized into stations for our sensory seekers to utilize during therapeutic sensory integration activities. Helping our students change how sensations are processed by the brain, may help them make better sense of the information they receive and grow their daily living skills.

My students have so much potential and sensory integration will help them as they work toward improving social interactions.

This is a great way to support education! Please, our students are depending upon your generosity. No donation is too small and every little bit helps get us closer to making our goal! Let us work toward making tomorrow better today.
