Help me give my students an opportunity to receive the sensory input they crave, with items like a busy board, magic cube, musical doodle board, and more.
My students go to school at a public elementary school. My students are in a special education classroom serving students with severe intellectual disabilities. Some students in my class are unable to walk, have visual or hearing impairments, as well as the need for communication devices. Each students' disabilities vary from one to the other, but they all have one thing in common; they want to learn. A quote that I feel represents my classroom was written by George Evans, "Every student can learn, just not on the same day or in the same way!"
My Project
Often when a student has a developmental disability they have sensory seeking behaviors. These items I am requesting will allow my students to receive that sensory input they crave. You may see students spinning in circles, banging objects on a table, jumping up and down, or mouthing objects to receive that input. Having a sensory station within the classroom will give my students the opportunity to receive the sensory input in different ways. These items not only serve as sensory but they also help with fine motor skills. The Wonder Wheel and the Whirly Pop suction toys will help students, even with limited movements in their upper extremities, play with items without them moving away from them. The Mozart Music cube will help them focus on a task when waiting for their turn, thus cutting down on behaviors. The Water playmat will help my students who have limited mobility to interact with their hands while laying on their stomachs. One lesson I will teach using these items is color identification; the Munchkin Mozart Magic Cube has 6 sides with instruments that are all different colors. I will ask the student questions such as 'where is the green side.' Once they press the button they then receive an instant reward of hearing music played for them, which will keep them interested and motivated.
Music, light, and vibrations are the most sought after sensory cravings students have.
The Baby Music Shake Dancing Ball is sure to be a favorite and the Busy Board will help them to better develop their fine motor abilities and keep their attention! Every item requested serves a purpose for my students and will help stimulate brain development in a fun sensory-rich environment.
