Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Speech-Language Pathologist in an elementary school in a large district. I see many students who are working hard to improve their articulation, language, and social skills via spoken communication, American Sign Language (ASL), and communication devices (e.g. iPads, picture boards, etc.). I feel that they would benefit immensely from have multi-sensory items available to them instead of traditional pictures and videos.
I work with a variety of students who learn, play, and communicate in different ways.
My Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing population would benefit from visual, tactile, and scented items. My visually impaired students would benefit from tactile, scented, and items that make noise. The list of abilities and different scenarios go on and on.
I want to purchase items that incorporate all of the basic senses so each population can work and learn to their strengths. Every child deserves to communicate whether that's through traditional speech, ASL, or a communication device. I feel these items would help tremendously.
My Project
These items will be used to make sensory bins (e.g. winter bin with snow slime, water bead bin with ocean animals, etc.) that allow for a multi-sensory approach to language skills. These items allow students to use many of their senses to improve their expressive and receptive language skills.
I work with a variety of children who have auditory, visual, and cognitive impairments so it is imperative that I use their strengths when developing speech and language skills.
I love watching my students develop new skills during each speech session. My students and I would appreciate any help we can get! Thank you for caring!
