Sensory Sensitive Speech!

Help me give my students the benefit of a sensory-destimulating environment for speech! By using floor lamps and twinkle lights, my Autistic and neurodivergent students will not have to rely on the stimulating light that comes from fluorescents!

My Project

The site that I work at is home to many children who have diverse sensory needs. From the Autistic brain, to the high-anxiety child, to the overwhelmed neurotypical child, all students deserve to work on what is often the most difficult for them (speech and language skills), in an environment that makes them feel safe. Creating a sensory sensitive space will increase participation and allow my staff and I to build rapport. Even children who are being assessed will feel welcome and warm, rather than scared and overwhelmed by a space that has placed a high value on sensory needs.

Children deserve a space that makes them feel like that can say anything and do anything without the barriers of stimulating light to affect them.

All students benefit from having their sensory needs met and lighting plays a HUGE role in the way that we perceive the world. Imagine that the lights that you see are just as bright as a person driving with their brights on either coming your way or driving right behind you. Or imagine having flood lights follow you around all day! What a head ache! I want to take out one barrier of discomfort for all of my students, but particularly the neurodivergent students who perceive light in much more sensitive ways.
