Sensory Sensations

My students need 5 sensory materials in order to meet their sensory seeking needs.

My Students

While in kindergarten, you sat and listened to a story read by the teacher, you sat and learned your numbers and how to add and subtract, you learned to "learn". Your body was able independently maintain itself without added sensory stimulation. You were able to sit and focus on the teacher.

"Johnny" arrives each morning with a big smile on his face, eager to begin his learning adventure.  As we begin to assemble for our first activity, reading time, I notice that "Johnny" is nervous.  His smile is replaced with a frown and the wrinkles in his forehead grow deeper.

He tries very hard to sit on the carpet like the other students and listen carefully.  Before I complete the first paragraph, it is obvious that his attempts are insufficient.  He knows squirming and flapping his hands is wrong, but his body takes over.  Now, along with the physical challenges, he is faced with an emotional realization that he is misbehaving.  His classmates are staring, maybe even giggling, and ‘teacher’ is feeling the stress, as well.  But ‘teacher’ realizes there is a simple solution.  The next morning Johnny is given the opportunity to jump.  "Johnny" likes that very much and since his body has received the required stimuli, he is able to sit like the other students and learn.

My Project

Balance beams, bicycles, and special chairs are all examples of the equipment that will be utilized through this grant to enable my classroom of 15 ‘Johnny’s’ to engage in learning activities like reading and listening.  As they progress through their education, they will learn to seek sensory stimulus on their own before engaging in focus activities. The ability to provide them with these tools early in their educational career is essential to enabling them to reach their full potential.

Every child deserves the right to learn and it is our responsibility to provide each student with the resources they need to learn.  Your help in funding this project will enable my students to gain the input they need in order to learn the skills they need for a lifetime.
