Sensory Seekers

Help me give my students a sensory outlet by helping provide these resources. I have a class of mixed disabilities relating to speech, aggressive oppositional disorder, autism and ADHD. These resources are specific for students with special needs.

My Students

I have twelve high functioning students with autism. They all have great spunky personalities. They enjoy doing a variety of stimulating activities. However, throughout the day it is hard for students to regulate their bodies. In fact, we have many sensory opportunities that I’ve personally build into our already busy schedule. I’ve incorporated dance, sand, and technology. This is still not enough for some of my students who need to get up and run about the room. My most severe case will go so far as to run around in circles despite first-then, and a rewards chart, visual/physical prompts. We have given him a used OT cushion although it is broken. This works for some time. In addition, we have borrowed another students vest temporarily to see if it had any effect and it did! He did get up and run around but it was less frequent—and thus we were able to get the most work out of him. He can focus on his sight words, counting numbers, etc. So, this leads me to believe that we need one of our own! One vest is enough for my students.

My Project

Each of these items can be used on a rotating basis. The vibrating snake will not only be soothing for students and act as a form of therapy. My students love anything that create a sensory stimulation. The cushion will help students sit more easily in their chairs in between movement breaks. We have a broken one currently and still use it. So it would be nice to have one with air! The vest will help with body regulation, which will help students focus on Reading, Math, etc. We borrowed one for a short time to see if there was a positive effect and their was! So, if we can have one of our own we can put it to use.
