My Students

Hello! My name is Kelsey McConnell and I am the Intervention Specialist to 6 amazing young boys. My boys, our two paraprofessionals, and I make up the Junior High Autism Unit at our school. My boys are all energetic and full of life. In our home away from home (what we call our classroom) the students learn from a functional curriculum that targets content, communication, behavior, and social-emotional skills.

Each of my students work hard to overcome the challenges that make learning in a traditional setting difficult.

Positive mindsets and unyielding perseverance are common traits displayed by these boys on a daily basis. Their 'never give up' attitude is one that should be mimicked by students everywhere.

My Project

In our classroom, my students participate in stimulating activities and lessons built around the functional curriculum. Communication and understanding social behavior often prove difficult for my students. Sensory activities help my students improve interactions with each other while increasing engagement with learning content.

Sensory activities and flexible seating options provide students with the opportunity for functional communication and allows for a safe area to continue to gain a better understanding of personal and social behaviors.

Flexible seating allows my students to make choices about their learning environment. Students are asked to communicate their desired seating choice via their individual communication method. The requested materials will help provide new and exciting choices for my students!
