The students that receive physical therapy at Miller Elementary School are all individually gifted and collectively amazing. Each student has a diagnosis which directly impacts their ability to attend and actively participate in learning while maintaining a stable sitting posture. These challenges include severe Autism, Down Syndrome, rare genetic disorders, seizure disorders, learning disabilities, as well as emotional trauma to list a few. The majority of our students come from low income households.
A balance of movement and stability are key in gaining and maintaining attention to learning for these kids.
My Project
A part of the Physical Therapy services provided at Miller School is accessing and modifying the supportive seating options within the student's classroom. This requires adaptation as the students physical needs change. Many of my students are challenged in maintaining an upright "ready to learn" posture. Having various sensory supportive seating options available within the classroom keeps things fresh, creative and meets each students different needs.
Learning has many facets, a quiet stable body is an important part of focc=us.
Having varied seating options make learning more accessible to all students. Having choices of comfy floor seats and transition seating can take the anxiety out of school work.
