Let us be honest, life can be overwhelming sometimes, especially for kids who process the world a little differently. That’s where a sensory room comes in. It's a calming, safe space filled with things like soft lighting, textured materials, soothing sounds, and interactive tools that help kids reset, recharge, and refocus.
Some kids need a break, and that is okay.
Whether they are feeling anxious, overstimulated, or just need a few minutes to decompress, a sensory room gives them a chance to calm down in a healthy way. It’s like a mental and emotional pause button.
Kids can not learn if they are overwhelmed or shut down. Giving them a space to regulate their emotions helps them return to the classroom more focused. Alternative soft lighting, such as string globe lights, provides an environment that allows students to decompress and rest their eyes from the harsh fluorescent lights typically found in classrooms. A swing in the room provides a safe and confined place to sit that feels like a hug with a built-in rocking motion to help students regulate and relax.
It supports all kinds of needs. Sensory rooms are beneficial for students with autism, ADHD, anxiety, and other sensory processing challenges. But honestly, every kid can benefit from a peaceful space once in a while. Students with ADHD sometimes need to get their energy out. Sitting on something, such as an exercise ball, allows them to subtly release energy and calm their senses while bouncing lightly. Students benefit from having items to choose from such as fidgets, stress balls, sensory sand, and coloring sheets. We have selected a shelf that holds these items and allows students to choose a sensory item to use in the room.
