Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a NYC public school that services students with severe disabilities. We focus on vocational training for young adults with developmental disabilities. My class provides specifically designed individualized services to students with significant global delays including those students who have multiple disabilities.
Our mission is to provide instructional programs, which allow students to realize their talents, strengths, and capabilities, in order to live and work in our community as independently as possible.
In my classroom, we value active participation and first-hand experiences as a means for our students to reach high standards of achievement. We work on Vocational tasks with the students. We also work on coping with stressful situations with the students.
Many of our students are from low-income households and would typically not have the means to participate in many of these opportunities.
My Project
I want to give my students different tools to be able to have sensory input that is calming and relaxing for the students. I plan on having an area in my room to have a calming area. The soothing mats, vibrating pillows, stress balls, aqua beads, and all sensory items are calming, relaxing and fun to use.
We all have a way to cope with stressful situations, my students are non-verbal so it is more difficult to understand and help when they are up set; so providing a calming area will give the students a chance to have a place they know is a calm relaxing one.
