Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach students age 3-5 in a PPCD (Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities) classroom. Most of my students have various developmental disorders such as speech impairment, autism, or intellectual disabilities. This is their first experience in a school setting, and they require direct help to perform daily activities.
My students often require specialized, adaptive products to enhance their learning due to their developmental differences.
As a first year teacher, I would love assistance in obtaining these products. I teach at a Title I school with low income families, and any product we receive will be put to good use. Thank you!
My Project
I work with students who have a variety of developmental disabilities and syndromes. Although all children need to explore their senses in order to learn, it is especially important for my delayed students.
Many of my students have special sensory needs due to their diagnosis of autism or other impairments.
Research has proven that sensory exploration is extremely valuable for delayed children, and I often incorporate sensory centers into my lesson plans each week. My students love to learn through their hands, and I know they would love playing with this light table and sensory beads.
This light table with sensory beads will make a difference for my students because it will allow them to learn important concepts in a developmentally appropriate way. They can use the light up letters and numbers to learn the alphabet and counting skills. I can also use the table to supplement my weekly learning themes by making centers that relate to my lesson plan. For example, during bug week, I could place some pretend bugs on the table for my students to explore, and we could talk about how the bugs look different with the light on the table turned off vs. on.
Some of my students are only able to learn when they are sitting on a special chair cushion, holding something in their hands, or exploring different textures. I would greatly appreciate some assistance in helping my children learn math and letter concepts in the way that they learn best - through their senses.
