Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
We would like to add a sensory path to our Transitional Kindergarten through 1st grade playground. The stencils we requested, along with paint donated locally, will add color and opportunities for self-regulation on our busy playground. Additional students will have the opportunity to reinforce their learning by interacting with letters and numbers in a more kinesthetic way.
With the addition of the sensory path to our playground, we hope to offer students an opportunity to meet some of their sensory needs and (as stated on the vendor website) allow "the nervous system to reset to prepare their body for the classroom environment," as well as adding some structured choices.
Having these structured choices also helps students who are unsure how to navigate a new environment safely.
We are very fortunate to have a diverse population of learners on our campus and specifically on our playground. Our yard is used by students ranging from ages 4-7. These students include children who are coming to school for the first time as well as students who are new to the country. Our school houses one of the district's Autism Success Academies. Recess is one of the opportunities for integration between special education students and their general education peers. Additionally, all young learners are working on self-regulation skills and could benefit from additional tools (such as a sensory path) to help them learn to self-regulate, which enables them to further attend to their academic tasks.
With the addition of this sensory path, our team of teachers is excited about the opportunity to give students even more tools to set them up for success.
