I plan to enhance my dramatic play area and change themes throughout the year. With the ice cream manipulatives I have selected, I will transform my dramatic play center into an ice cream shop. This will allow my students to build social skills as they interact with one another by role playing as employees and customers. Students will be able to work on negotiating with one another to determine their roles within the center. They will also be working on turn taking. Later in the year, I will transform the center into a vet offfice where students can be pet owners, doctors, etc.
My second language students will have an opportunity to practice using English in a non threatening but purposeful manner as well as develop literacy and math skills in a natural way. All students will have opportunities to write and count while taking orders and paying for their ice cream. Throughout the center I will include picture and word cards, order sheets and price lists. Similarly, students will have opportunities to read and write in the veterinarians office. Students will naturally begin to interact with money as they see their families do in everyday life.
Students are most engaged when learning through purposeful play.
