My students need sensory materials that will help regulate their bodies. The children can use the trampoline to jump on to alert themselves if they have low sensory arousal.
As a school-based provider of speech therapy, I work with many diverse students, ranging from grades Pre-K to 8th grade. My students have an array of disabilities and disorders, which include and are not limited to, Autism, Sensory Processing Disorders, Attention Deficit Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Intellectual Disability, Speech and Language Impairments, Prader-Willi Syndrome, Down Syndrome, and varying Muscular Dystrophies. The students also come from families of varying income levels and cultural backgrounds. In order for these students to meet the grade level expectations, they require modifications and accommodations to access the curriculum.
My students suffer from various disabilities and issues that negatively affect their ability to effectively communicate their wants, needs, thoughts, and ideas, as well as actively participate in the large classroom setting.
My Project
By having sensory materials, my special needs students will be able to release their anxiety, calm down, and become more active learners. My students need sensory items to provide sensory input that many children with special needs crave. Whether it is visual or tactile, the toys have the power to capture their attention and ease anxiety. Additional benefits of sensory materials are, they will enhance learning and play. Sensory stimulation can engage different areas of the brain, helping children absorb and retain more information and better meet the needs of the individual. Students can explore kinetic sand or regulate their bodies by jumping on trampoline.
The donations for this project will improve my classroom by reducing the amount of behavioral issues, because I will be able to provide the appropriate stimulation that my students need, but cannot voice, due to their disabilities.
With less behavioral issues, we can increase our learning and time on task. I'm looking forward to seeing my students happier and ready to learn.
