As a school-based therapist and related service provider, it is my professional goal to provide all students with the best possible education to ensure a successful future and access to the curriculum. It is not easy for students to sit in a chair for all the activities we complete throughout the 6 1/2 hour school day. I want our therapy room to reflect the diversity of the students we treat and flexible seating and necessary materials will provide a variety of options for all of our learners. My students have a desire to interact with others and express themselves. Many of the students who have difficulty with language skills, also exhibit delays with motor skills as well. These students benefit greatly from flexible seating options, that will work on their core, balance, posture, and strength, while at the same time increasing focus and attention. Many of them have difficulty with sensory regulation- or the ability of our bodies to respond to and regulate messages received by the brain from the environment. Because the students have disabilities that cause them to have difficulties with attention, physical movement is incorporated and integrated into our therapy activities. Movement around the therapy room and appropriate use of flexible seating creates a relaxed environment that helps to increase attention and focus while also addressing speech, occupational, and physical therapy goals. The therapy room and classrooms should reflect the diversity of the students treated and flexible seating and materials will provide a variety of options for all of all learners. The flexible seating options chosen for this project were carefully selected to fit within the therapy room so as to increase attention and comfortability while also addressing both physical and sensory needs.
