My students need sensory materials to help them release stress and calm themselves in a safe way.

I am a special education teacher who works with 4th and 5th graders with learning disabilities in a Title One School. These students often get overlooked and have not been pushed to reach their full potential. Throughout the school year I will challenge them to be better than the person they were yesterday. I want them to see how important and valuable they are. They need to believe they can succeed. Through thoughtful instruction and guidance my goal is to show them just how much they can accomplish.
When my students become overwhelmed or frustrated, they often do not know how to calm themselves back down.
Using sensory items will help them calm down and relieve stress,
These materials will help students at St. Marys be able to take a break when they become overwhelmed and/or anxious. This will allow students to release frustrations and stress in a safe and appropriate way. The items I am asking for are sensory balls and shapes that will allow students to rub or squeeze these items to provide a stress relief. I am also asking for silly sensory mats that students can sit on to help them be able to stay in their chairs during a lesson. The last thing I am asking for is a light sensory table and tray.
Allowing students an appropriate way to release stress will help improve their academic achievement.
It will allow them to stay in the classroom more and get in less trouble throughout the day. It also means they can have more positive experiences throughout the school day. They will also be able to learn how to work together to solve problems. While using sensory items they can also work on their social skills.
