Help me give my students a place where they can feel calm and comfortable, with a heat sensitive color-changing wall activity, water bubble wall, and more.
Our school is the only “community school” left in our district. We have students in Head Start through sixth grade. We have lost several students over the years because our families often struggle to find employment and opportunity. We live in a high poverty district with more than 90% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. We have a sense of family within our school.
What I love most about our students is the grit and tenacity they show, despite the struggles a lot of them have in a given day.
Many of our students are raised by their grandparents, have parents that don't have jobs, or for many their meals for the day come from when they are at school. Despite all that negativity they show up and work hard every day. The best part of the day is when you can give that student a high-five, a hug or just a positive remark and see that smile spread across their face.
My Project
Sensory spaces in schools have been shown to decrease negative behaviors in all types of students as well as improve student engagement. A sensory room can help children learn how to control their bodies, emotions, develop muscle control and awareness of what's around them. For students with disabilities who require related services, a sensory room could allow these professionals to work within this setting to develop motor skills and improve cognitive functioning, especially in students with autism, as it can help them explore cause and effect. Sensory rooms can bring calming effects and help students with and without disabilities a place to regain control of their emotions. It can improve focus for students with ADHD, Autism, or other developmental disorders.
More and more students are being diagnosed with autism, ADHD and recently there has been a push to provide trauma informed care and be aware of the mental health needs of students.
A sensory room with bubble tubes of changing colors can offer a calm lighting and relaxation. The wobble boards can provide stimulation for those students who need movement in order to function in the classroom. Our interactive wall panels of different textures can offer sensory stimulation. A weighted blanket can provide the deep compression an autistic student may need to calm down for a intense episode. The interactive wall panels can allow for engagement and cognitive development within the room. The sensory path stickers to put on the floor can offer movement to a child with ADHD, or any child, to allow for a brain break or that opportunity for movement so they can be focused in the classroom.
