Sensory Integration Equals Happy Learners!

Help me give my students a room divider, coding robots, dry erase lap boards and more for hands-on sensory learning and calming tools!

My Students

We are a high support special education class of 1st and 2nd graders with various disabilities. We work in small groups, one on one, and whole group instruction on our DonorsChoose-funded class rug to practice for inclusion time. We love mystery science as a whole group!

We are an energetic bunch that loves having fun as we learn!

We love and need lots of hands-on activities and sensory input. Progress is celebrated, academic and social, whether big steps or small steps. Our room is set up to effect the best learning possible.

My Project

We have a sensory area in our room, thanks to generous donors of a previous project! We would like to add more to this area to increase calming opportunities as well as hands-on learning.

The calm of a weighted blanket does wonders for regulating my students.

Currently, they ask independently to use our one and only blanket. Having more than one and in different weights will help individualize self-regulation as they explore which blanket helps them the most.

Hands-on STEM robot activities, whiteboards, and CVC word builders will help them through their own sensory exploration of what we are learning in our academic groups. My students are very interested in robots and do well with self-paced science exploration as an introduction to science and engineering topics. These resources will help with that exploration as budding scientists and engineers.

Kinetic sand, sensory floor tiles, stress balls, and stretchy string all are great tools to help deescalate a revved-up mind.

The calm color room divider provides reduced distraction and quieting ability for both the sensory area and small group areas as both are used concurrently.

The ability to self-regulate is vital for my students to be successful in their learning. These new tools added to our sensory area would add more excitement for learning and self-regulation.
