Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are K-Middle School students who attend a Title I DC public school and receive special education services. We proudly support our special education population which constitutes about 23%, including 5 self-contained classrooms, who support students with varying disabilities including Autism, Down syndrome, and ID. Students within our self-contained classrooms have intensive communication deficits and learning needs. Our dedicated staff and students work tireless via the implementation of evidence-based practices to bridge those gaps.
Our students are energetic, creative and courageous.
Each day, students access academic instruction, targeted interventions, and communication supports. In special education, we often encounter problem behavior which can interfere with students accessing instruction. It is important to know, that problem behavior is a form of communication and as educators it is our goal to identify what each student is trying to communicate. Our team works diligently to teach more appropriate ways to communicate and reduce problem behavior; allowing students to not only access instruction but enjoy it!
My Project
Research shows that one of the reasons we do the things we do (behave) is for sensory needs. Within our special education population this may be exhibited via wiggling in a chair, biting body surfaces, jumping, repetitive motor movements etc… While these behaviors help students get the input they are seeking, they often interfere with instruction.
Thus, alternative seating, chewelry, weighted vests/laps, chair kick bands can be great adaptations and supports.
With our high need, special education population, these items will be used to trial and teach alternative ways to seek sensory feedback; allowing to meet the needs of our students and enhancing their academic experience.
