Sensory Gadgets for our Wiggly Bodies

My students need sensory tools, like weighted blankets and lap buddies, to help them relax and calm their bodies during various activities in school.

My Students

My class has a lot of challenging behaviors and sensory needs, we struggle during group activities because they cannot stay sitting, they have repetitive uncontrollable movement and hyperactivity, which also hinders their focus and learning.

My students belong to a 6:1:1 self-contained class of Children with Autism (moderate to severe)in Queens, New York.

They are in Grade 1-3 and are 7-8 years old. They are such an active and wiggly group of kids with great personalities.

My Project

Inspite of the challenging behaviors and sensory needs of my students, they have great potential to learn and actively participate during group activities in school. In my class, we do pre/post sensory activity at least 2-3 times a day. The sensory tools that I am requesting(weighted blanket, lap buddies)will be very useful during sensory activities to help them relax and calm them before and after an activity, when they are calm and relax, they have better focus, therefore they can learn more. Also, the sensory gadget like the "clip,clip", and "lap belt" can be also use for student needs continuous sensory input during group activities. I only have 1 weighted vest in my classroom right now, it is very challenging if there's more than 2 student who needs it at the same time.

If I have more sensory tools available for my students to use, it will definitely help my students to learn, participate and be successful in school.

When they have a relaxed and calm body, they will also have more focus and concentration, and as a teacher I can help them achieve their maximum potential to learn.
