This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Our students (and students all over the world) are struggling with pandemic learning loss in both instruction and social-emotional growth. As an instructional coach at my school, I spend a lot of time working with students who need support with SEL and self-regulation. I recently had a project funded to turn my office space into a sensory-friendly space for students in need of SEL support. The project was a huge success!
I would like to continue to provide a safe space with calm-down supports (fidgets, mindful activities, books) for students to be when they need it, along with giving students opportunities to practice self-regulation techniques to determine what works best for them.
Having had students use my office for the past few months, I have gotten a lot of feedback about what they enjoy most about being in my space and what materials have been the most helpful for them.
We want students to be happy at school and to recognize and regulate emotions. In the past few months, my space has given students a place where they can self-regulate when feeling overwhelmed. I want to build on this success and continue to offer a safe space for students in crisis and to help them grow as both students and people! Thank you!
