Sensory Exploration and Flexible Seating During COVID-19

Help me give my students sensory mats, shapes, and balls and the beanbag seats they need during COVID-19.

This project expired on March 31, 2021.

My Students

My students are in the fourth, fifth, or sixth grade. I teach a special class for students with autism spectrum disorders and communication disorders in the capital district of New York. All of my students communicate in different ways. My students have very significant needs and require curriculum and instruction tailored to their individual needs.

My students are very unique learners.

Each student learns in a very different way. My students require frequent sensory breaks to help keep them regulated while at school. In order to continue to stay in-person and keep our classroom safe during COVID-19 we need some more sensory objects so that each student can get their own sensory bin. We also need to increase on flexible seating options in the classroom as we are not allowed to share materials due to the pandemic.

My Project

Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders have intense sensory needs. Sensory objects and flexible seating help my students have a more successful school experience. I am requesting sensory mats, shapes, and balls and the beanbag seats.

Sensory objects are crucial in providing breaks to help students stay regulated throughout the day.

In order to stay safe during COVID-19, each student has their own sensory bin with objects that they can explore throughout the day.

For example, when my students are upset they can squeeze kinetic sand or a sensory gel shape to help them calm down and be able to focus back on their work. Other sensory objects that will help my students calm down are the sensory balls or wonder wands. My students need these sensory objects for visual stimulation to help them regulate their bodies. All objects will help students be more successful throughout the day.

Bean bag chairs are a lifeline in my classroom. Several students in my class need these flexible seating objects to help regulate their bodies. A break in our side room laying on a bean bag really helps them calm down so that they can come back into the classroom and learn. We are in need of new bean bag chairs as our old ones have holes due to how often they are used.

Thanks in advance!
