Sensory Escape for Students with Disabilities

Help me give my students the opportunity to a place where they can feel a sense of calm and comfort. Sensory rooms help children learn to self-regulate their behaviors, which ultimately improves focus.

My Project

I teach at a post high school for adults ages 18-22 with disabilities. I teach the BCIS class, which stands for, Behavior Communication Intensive Support Program. My students have a variety of intellectual and physical disabilities, which makes it hard for them to regulate their behaviors and emotions. Most of my students are completely non-verbal and have severe communication challenges. Our program focuses on building independence and helping them prepare for life as an adult.

The supplies I am requesting will help us create a sensory room where my students can take time to find a sense of calm and comfort.

Sensory rooms help students learn to self-regulate their behaviors, which ultimately will improve their self-control and focus. This will allow the students to learn safe ways to request breaks when feeling overstimulated.

Several items such as the sequin fabric, sensory toys, sensory mats, busy boards, Thera putty, etc. help with the touch sensory. Many students find fidgeting or touching different textures very soothing. Some students enjoy sound and making music. They would enjoy using the piano mat and instruments. Sight is another sense that calms many students. We can help with this by using LED push lights, floor tiles, mirrors, star lights, and bubble fish tubes. Many students like to use movement as an outlet to release built-up energy. They could do different activities using foam play sets and blocks, hammock chairs, and yoga ball chairs. Many also find pressure on their bodies soothing. Students could use the sensory sock to receive that pressure on their entire bodies.
