Sensory Dramatic Play helps Special Education Students with Real Life

Help me give my students dramatic play furniture to encourage speech and problem solving in our special education preschool class.

This project is fully funded

My Project

My preschool, special education students must learn how to interact and solve real-life problems. Some of the students in my classroom like to pretend and use their imaginations while other students do not have the same skills. The children who do not know how to interact with other students learn by emulating their peers and using sensory experiences. As they dress up as different community helpers they play together and use their knowledge to interact properly and to solve conflicts that arise in a safe environment. Most of the students in our class have communication needs and receive speech language therapy.

Right now our classroom doesn't have a dramatic play area or accessories to go with it to encourage the interaction and imaginary play they need to process new things they learn and their problem solving skills.

We are asking for a dress up storage furniture to hold the materials the students will need to dress up in as a community helper. They will use the vet kit, hair stylist system and costumes to act out different careers they might have when they are older. We want to encourage them to think about the future and what kind of job they might like as well as the skills that they would need to get and keep that job. We would like them to develop these skills by pretending to be the worker and the customer.

Several of our students are under the autism umbrella and almost all of our students need to learn socialization and real-life skills. This would be a great opportunity for the students to practice their interactions and speech-language skills with their peers. If conflict arises during their play they would have the chance to practice the problem solving process they will need throughout their entire life.
