Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a part of a substantially separate classroom in an inner city school outside of Boston, that targets their social emotional and behavioral needs in addition to their academic needs. While each group of kiddos presents with different needs, this particular crew is highly sensory and tangible goal oriented. They are all boys who adore star wars, minecraft, coloring, anything that allows them to build and create, and even though it can sometimes come with a tantrum or not look exactly the same as other students, they all love to learn.
I am working to create an environment where relationships and respect are a priority in order to help students learn to their fullest potential.
Your contribution will help students learn healthy stress-relieving strategies, learn pro-social play skills, and help them have tangible rewards when they participate in the highly structured rewards system.
My Project
Your contribution will help students learn healthy stress-relieving strategies, learn pro-social play skills, and help them have tangible rewards when they participate in the highly structured rewards system. These students, with social emotional and behavioral disabilities have a high need for objects that are beyond the typical academic supply list. Every day we use the sensory objects to help students with transitions throughout the day. They come to rely on these tools to help them make safe choices every day. They even start to become incredibly creative with the tools to start expressing their unique strengths.
Our school is an urban k-8 school where students are often overcoming obstacles before they even walk in the door in the morning.
Being able to come into a safe space where they know what to expect, have concrete rules and consequences, and know that there are tools they can use to help regulate themselves can make a world of difference for my students. The sensory tools in the list, such as the theraputty, noise cancelling headphones are tangible objects students can use to release their feelings of anxiety and anger. Gradually, most students are able to use the knowledge about their body in anxiety through the tools, and transition from using tools to other strategies in a larger classroom setting. This allows students to become successful across multiple settings in school and outside of school. The books provided from this project will help give students visuals and a jumping off point for social skills lessons throughout the year. The toys within the list, such as the legos and lego men, are part of a larger rewards system where students can earn rewards for reducing certain behaviors and exhibiting pro-social behaviors learned through the social skills lessons.
