All children are special! I have a special place in my heart for the children I have taught and are teaching this year. My class this year is diverse. Diverse learners with diverse needs. These are the children I teach.
My class is full of readers, thinkers, artists, athletes, musicians, social butterflies, singers, quiet thinkers, and loud talkers.
Growing humans from all walks of life. They are wonderful individuals, with amazingly different personalities. They bring interesting and creative pieces to our classroom climate. Each one an important part of the whole.
My Project
Current research shows that possibly up to 40% of children under the age of 16 will experience at least one significant, potentially traumatizing event. Brain research tells us that children who have experienced trauma can exist in a persisting state of fear. What these students experience outside of the classroom impacts their behavior and learning in the classroom.
The tools in this Calm Down Kit will equip my students with the resources they need to handle and process their emotions in a constructive and appropriate manner.
This kit provides students with physical, sensory, and tactile manipulatives to help self regulate their emotions. Self regulation takes practice. This kit is designed to create a safe space in our classroom for children to practice self regulation and calm down. Using the indoor tent, students can physically separate themselves from classroom. Once they are in this separate space, they will be able to use the sensory and tactile items, such as: the fidgets, etch a sketch, coloring book, and palm massager. These items are intended to de-stress and regulate emotions. Other items, such as the string lights and essential oil diffuser, are intended to create a calm space to reduce stress. After a few minutes, students will be able to calmly return to the classroom environment and continue with learning.
Calm Down Kits are an effective, positive tool for reducing frustration, aggression, and promoting positive behavior. This kit will let students know they will always have a safe and appropriate way to process and manage their feelings and emotions and hopefully teach life long skills of self regulation.
