Sensory Bins for Speech Therapy

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I serve 20-30 students throughout the school year between two schools, a K-2nd and a 3rd-5th. The students on my caseload vary from speech only to students with learning disabilities, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, ADD/ADHD, etc.

Each student that I serve has individualized speech therapy goals, requiring individualized therapy materials.

The students on my caseload have a variety of IEP goals. Some are articulation only, working on producing sounds correctly and some are working on increasing their expressive and receptive language skills.

My Project

It is important to keep your students engaged during speech therapy sessions. For that reason, I try to integrate books, board games and other hands on activities to keep my students engaged and on task during therapy.

For each season, I will create a sensory box to go along with my themed therapy sessions.

The sensory box will include manipulatives that go along with the theme. The students will use tweezers and/or shovels to dig through the box to find the items. We then target goals as we identify/express vocabulary, answer 'wh' questions about the objects, demonstrate understanding of basic concepts (color, size, prepositions, etc.), and MORE!
