Speech therapists work on production of /r/ using a variety of techniques. The /r/ sound has proven to be one of the most difficult sounds to teach to children. With a Speech Buddy, the tool teaches children the correct tongue placement for the /r/ sound by placing the tool in the student's mouth and having them practice "unrolling" the tool using their tongue. Speech Buddy Placement Tools have been proven to remediate speech 3-4 times faster than traditional therapy techniques. Remediating sound faster means less time in therapy and more time in the classroom setting. Along with allowing the student more time in the classroom, remediating the /r/ sound also increases social and emotional development in students. It is common for students with articulation disorders to be shy or withdrawn due to their speech sound errors.
