I teach a small group of high school students with a wide range of disabilities such as specified learning disabilities, ADHD, autism, cerebral palsy, intellectual disorders, physical impairments, etc.
My students are eager to learn but at times they can become overwhelmed.
I want my classroom to be a safe space for them emotionally and an environment conducive to learning.
My Project
Classrooms can be stressful, noisy, and challenging at times. Now imagine being a child with autism or severe anxiety in that setting. It is easy to become over-stimulated and stressed out. Maybe you just need a few minutes to gather your thoughts and calm down. Our sensory and relaxation center will provide just that for these students.
One of my students has seizures quite often and needs an area to go to so that he can be calm and recover from his seizure activity.
This has been beneficial in the past for him. Also, this area could provide an inviting atmosphere for my students with physical impairments to work on their motor skills.
