My classroom is a place of energy, diversity, and different learning styles. I am amazed daily how much my students learn and want to learn. My resource students are learning independence and acceptance that they can do the work on their own and do it well.
I teach at an ASL/English school.
My students are Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing with an addition disability such as Autism, vision, motor, cognitive, ADHD, and other syndromes and conditions. They are learning ASL (American Sign Language) and written English. They depend on a visual setting for learning. They also need manipulatives, sensory, motor, and other teaching aids to help them with their different learning styles..
My Project
Increasing and developing fine motor skills can help my students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. My students can also choose a sensory item to help them be better learners by calming down and refocusing with a visual toy when they become overwhelmed or overstimulated. Making sure my students are in an environment that is comfortable is an essential component of learning in my classroom. I have noticed differences in classroom behavior when my students when they are given a choice of sensory tools. They tend to be more engaged in their learning time and get more work completed. The fine motor tools will strengthen their hands so they feel successful in writing.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional activities to develop fine motor skills and options to choose when they need time to refocus.
The pencil grips will help them hold their writing tool comfortably and aid in writing, drawing and pressure applied to the paper. The texture boards will help them to learn to provide even pressure over a surface. The visual sensory toys will provide a tool to calm and help refocus overstimulated or overwhelmed minds and bodies. These will be extremely beneficial for some students that just need a break
I have seen the diversity of my students sensory and fine motor needs and how choices in materials can positively affect my students work and focus in the classroom.
