Sensory Aids for Sensational Exceptional Learners

My Students

I teach in a public career and technical education high school in East New York. Our students love hands-on projects, working in groups, and learning about technology!

If you've never seen a 9th grader explain how to operate a cutting-edge subway car, you need to come by my class.

My learners are not only knowledgeable about the latest technology, but they're also passionate about sharing their knowledge with others.

My learners are passionate, generous, energetic, and committed to learning. I'm inspired daily by how they overcome obstacles to pursue success. I hope that this project can help me support them in attaining their goals!

My Project

Sensory aids such as fidget cubes and stress balls are shown to encourage focus and attention to class instruction in students who struggle with attention. I recently lent a fidget spinner to one of my students during a project, and I noticed that it greatly increased his ability to focus. Intrigued, I lent the spinner to a few of my other students during a variety of activities.

Regardless of the activity being performed, my students were noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they were given a sensory aid such as a fidget spinner.

However, I currently do not have enough sensory aids for my students who need them. Because of this, I am seeking to build a classroom set of sensory aids to support my exceptional learners, so they can demonstrate their full true potential.
