I am a fourth-grade teacher and work at a school that consistently strives to actively engage families and children from a low-income community of Sunset Park, Brooklyn.
My school serves students in grades K-5, while also working to engage multi-generational families, a significant majority of whom are first-generation immigrants and speak different languages at home from our school community.
My children have overcome unimaginable challenges just to sit in my classroom. I'm committed to making their experience with me extraordinary. Every supply and book that we get in our classroom gives my students another potential advantage in their life. Moreover, they are students who genuinely want to do the best work they can and often put pressure on themselves. I'm working this year to provide a warmer, more calming environment for them.
My Project
I've noticed this year that my students have been extra fidgety, and don't seem to be as "in control of their bodies" as in years past. I've been working to address this with physical education and meditation work, but I'm looking for ways to help them focus during work time.
I believe that these chair bands and stability cushions will help my students focus more during work time; the idea is that if they can be more in control over their personal space during work time, the stronger their gains will be.
That's the hope; by addressing students' sensory needs, that I'll provide them with a stronger foundation for deeper, more rigorous work.
