My Students

I am an Occupational Therapist working in the schools. My students may require more resources from time to time to reach their potential but they are unique, charismatic, and hardworking. Many of my students enter high school with a focus on vocational skills. Due to Covid-19 and various other new variables, our students have less opportunity in the community to work on their vocational skills before graduating and getting a job. Practicing vocational skills is vital to students being employable and getting a job post-high school.

Covid-19 has also been very tough on my students' ability to attend class and learn.

Many of my students have a hard time staying seated due to sensory dysregulation. Unfortunately, resources are thinning and help to make resources and provide tools to regulate my students so that they have a positive experience at school.

My Project

These materials will be provided to my students at school to help them regulate their bodies and be able to participate in school and have a positive experience. Research supports that young learners are often most impacted by their early years in education. For my students who have a hard time staying regulated, this can mean they "learn" to dislike school at a young age because they are constantly battling a "fight or flight" type feeling in their bodies due to their sensory systems being dysregulated.

A wiggle set, chair band, or noise-canceling headphones can be the difference between a child constantly fighting with their sensory system and struggling to learn- hence yielding a poor experience in school- and being able to remain seated and engaged in learning while fostering their love for learning.

These basic needs for a student often do not get met due to decreased supply and availability of tools.
