This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is in a high poverty area. Most of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced lunch. I see my students wanting to succeed but the odds are stacked against them. They have limited opportunities for exposure to good books, technology, the arts, performances, museums and other enrichment activities because their families can't afford it. I feel very passionate about giving them equal opportunities for access to education. Part of my job is to find ways to foster and develop a love for learning that will uplift them throughout their lives. As a teacher, with almost fifteen years of experience under my belt, I have learned that my students need many interventions. But above all, they need to fall in love with learning during their primary years. That is why I feel the urgency to find ways to enrich my classroom and fulfill my students' needs.

My Project

The books will make a difference because my Spanish Dual Immersion students don't have enough Spanish books at their level. I have two groups of 26 students learning Spanish. My students borrow books from the classroom library to read at their own level. They read the books to their peers in the classroom or take them home to read to their family These books need to be interesting, colorful and at a variety of reading levels appropriate for second graders.

Currently our classroom library doesn't have enough books for all of my fifty two students.

Sometimes when one of my classes borrows books there is very little left for the next class. My students love to read and once they become fluent they do it voraciously. I would like to give my second graders the variety of choices they deserve.
