Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am currently a fourth-grade bilingual reading teacher at a Title I school. Here at our school, we have 750+ students, ranging from kindergarten to sixth grade, with over 90% coming from low-income backgrounds. We also have a vast range of reading levels. Further developing not only my classroom library, but our school wide library collection, would so greatly benefit our scholars. Not only my 4th grade students would benefit from this, but all students at this school. I believe the need to have access to quality and culturally relevant chapter books that promote diversity, inclusion, and acceptance.
As a reading teacher, it is extremely vital to develop a collection of Spanish-Language books that allows students to enjoy reading in their native language without any added pressures.
This has the potential to positively impact how students see and accept themselves in this diverse world we live in.
Students get a chance to develop a sense of pride in their culture along with increasing self-awareness. Students will be able to enlighten themselves with not only information pertaining to their own personal culture, but other cultures similar to theirs and even opposing cultures that could help them navigate the world around them.
Teaching English language learners has brought me to realize that we don't emphasize or recognize the importance of reading in your native language. Spanish books can benefit ELLs as they provide encouragement and opportunities to enjoy reading without working to translate.
