My students need the experience of a lifetime. My students need an overnight trip to Washington D.C.

Greetings. To know middle school students is to love and cherish their unique perspective on the world. There are those who think middle school students should be sent to the woods for a few years and then come back once they are ready to join the rest of us. I feel like that sometimes. Our kids, children from the Ocean Hill - Brownsville section of Brooklyn are just like any other. With the exception that they live in a world of concrete and what "green" areas they have they can't grow or play on because of what pollutants are in the ground.
Our school is the Brooklyn Environmental Exploration School. The word "exploration" is in our name, it is in our curriculum and it is in our blood. We travel, look around, explore and learn outside of the classroom.
Recently, there was a photo posted on Facebook of my 8th grade class' trip to Washington DC, which was many many moons ago.
We were all sitting on the steps of the US Capitol (can't do that anymore), looking so full of wonder and promise with our 1980s haircuts. When looking at the photo it hit me, why can't that be my students? Our new school opened in 2013 and are at full size this year. We are a Title I school with 100% of our students receiving free lunch. We are a school where all students are learning, happy and safe.
We would like to eliminate any barriers to any students attending the Washington DC trip. This is why I posted to Donorschoose.org. If we can get this funded then all students, regardless of financial situation, can participate in this memorable experience. Twenty years from now we want them to be passing awkward group photos around online of their middle school trip to Washington.
