My Students

My students are reluctant to read anything outside of the genre they are most comfortable with, realistic fiction. I want to help them experience the excitement of traveling into the future with science fiction and the suspense of trying to survive with dystopian literature.

My seventh and eighth graders are just learning that reading can be both fun and rewarding.

They attend a school in a high poverty district and have had very limited exposure to any kind of literature. I want to help them discover that reading a book can be an exciting adventure. Many of my students have never left their own neighborhood. Reading science fiction will allow them to travel through both space and time and will give them a new perspective on the world.

My Project

A class set of the book Blood Red Road and the audio book will be used as a read-aloud with all four of my classes. This project will help turn my students into broad readers who think about the future and their impact on it. Reading new genres will create a greater love of reading and improved comprehension skills. The content of this book will allow students to explore the evolution of language, the importance of setting, and the universal themes found in all genres of literature.

Reading a book aloud with students creates a love for literature, a sense of shared literacy, and makes a huge difference in students' reading abilities and attitudes toward reading.
