My Students

“I am the hopeful black woman who was denied her right to vote. I am the caring white supporter killed on the front lines of freedom. I am the unarmed black kid who maybe needed a hand but was instead given a bullet. Selma has awakened my humanity. Selma is now.” -Common

My students range from 16 to 21.

They are trying to obtain their high school diploma. 99% of my students are African American. They all qualify for the free lunch program and over half of them are considered homeless. Our school is an alternative charter school, which means that in order to get to our school the student has to have been unsuccessful at their first high school.

My Project

Every day the students and teachers have "large group". This helps establish our family mentality and have everyone in the school come together as one united unit. After the entire school views this movie together we will be able to have great group discussions relating to the movie as well as related relevant issues happening all around the world, especially within our country.

It is very important that all of my students view this movie to show them how so many people bravely fought for rights that they have today.

I hope to have many discussions relating to the movie Selma and I imagine many of the teachers in our school will be able to relate the topics they are teaching to this beautiful movie as well.
