My Students

I teach both agriculture and metal shop courses. The students I teach are talented young agriculturists with a will to learn. They are very interested in developing their skills in the greenhouse, metal shop, and in their livestock projects, as well as the classroom. Some students live on ranches, and others have no agricultural experience. They come from a very small community in northeastern Wyoming where budget cuts have had a negative effect in their homes and our school.

My students are amazingly talented and hungry to learn, but they are limited by our rural location and limited access to supplies.

We have many projects going on in our classroom and shop including ruminant dissection, crop experiments in the greenhouse, and major metal fabrication. Our most recent dream is of a school farm where students can learn about livestock and crop production through hands-on, project-based learning initiatives.

My Project

FFA is the largest student-led organization in the country its mission is "dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education." One way that we as agriculture teachers and FFA advisors help FFA achieve this mission is Career Development Events (CDE). These events expose young people to careers within agriculture and hopefully gain enough interest for youngsters to pursue that career.

Agriculture Sales is a CDE that requires students to develop a sales plan for a specific project and then conduct a sales call to a panel of judges.

Traditionally team members compile a one-inch binder with a printed PowerPoint sales pitch. My team, however, is going above and beyond the norm and realize that salesmen don't have three-ring binders but nice portfolios. Help me set my students apart from the other teams with these portfolios.
