Self Portraits!

Help me give my students create self portraits! I am requesting mirrors so the students can use themselves as references & skin tone & paint sticks to complete the project. The most expensive item is the paint sticks.

My Project

With this project, students will learn about famous self portrait artists, like Frida Kahlo and Vincent Van Gogh, who used themselves as references! The specific artist I want to reference is Kehinde Wiley, an American New York based artist. He is especially famous for his portrait of Barack Obama with the floral background. He challenged the norm of the portraits that were typically housed in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery.

They will be creating their own version using mirrors to draw and reference themselves and create their own colorful floral pattern background!

This project will teach color, mixed media, collage, and of course the history of self portraits! I want to them to feel free to express themselves with their background and use different mediums at the same time, teaching about realism and history.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
