FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Ofstie's classroom raised $170
This project is fully funded
Hi! I am a sixth grade English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher in a very poor area of Brooklyn, NY. My students are beginning level English language learners from all different parts of the world. I would like to do a unit of study with them all about the famous Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo. Frida Kahlo had a very interesting and painful life, and she painted many self-portraits.
First, I would like the students to learn about Frida Kahlo's life and art through various children's books. Then, the class will create their own self-portraits using Frida Kahlo's artwork as inspiration. The unit will culminate with the creation of an internet "mini-museum," where all the students will scan their artwork and create a website displaying their self-portraits.
Part 1 of my proposal is for seven various children's books from Barnes and Noble that are about the life and art of Frida. They are all geared for middle school students and show various replicas of her portraits. These books are necessary for our unit of study so that students can see ample examples of Frida's work. It's also important that the material be presented in a way that 6th graders will understand and be able to relate to, and all of these books are perfect.
I do very little artwork in my class because I lack the resources to do so. I really feel that learning about Frida Kahlo and creating self-portraits will be so fun and beneficial for my students. Please help us enjoy this memorable unit of study together. Thank you!
