Our school is a safe place for students. For many of our kids, our school is their only safe place. Our children are from some of the highest poverty families in Anchorage. As one of the most diverse schools in Alaska, we have a very high number of English language learners from many different cultural backgrounds. Many of our children are in constant crisis at home whether it is physical, mental, or emotional turmoil that they suffer everyday.
Through the development of social and emotional skills, Muldoon students are becoming some of the most thoughtful and hardworking children in Alaska .
They are learning how to be caring, thoughtful, and conscientious of themselves and others through self-regulation. As a teacher at our school, I struggle every day with fostering self-awareness, self-management, and coping skills to help my students be successful learners, friends, and citizens.
My Project
With personal power and self-regulation skills, students will be better learners and citizens. Your donation will give students books that teach through social stories that they can relate to. By learning skills in communicating and interacting with others, they can use their personal voice to communicate their needs positively rather than using body language, frustration, anger, or acting out to communicate their feelings.
When students are able to control their emotional state, they can positively communicate their needs and avoid emotional mayhem that causes conflict.
Students learn through their interactions with others around them in how to treat others and understanding they should be treated. Let's give children an opportunity to learn how to communicate their needs proactively rather than reacting negatively!
