My Students

Hello! I am one of five members of the mental health team at our school. Our school serves 120 students K-12 who have emotional and behavioral disorders. These students attend our school because they have the most acute emotional and behavioral needs in our school district.

Each of our students has experienced traumas that impact their everyday functioning.

Our students require an extra emphasis on social-emotional skills to aid them in regulating their behaviors and emotions. Despite the barriers our students face, they are very resilient and often excited to develop new skills.

My Project

We've made it through the first semester of this year and our students are continuing to learn valuable skills during their daily social emotional learning lessons. Our students are constantly working to improve their social and emotional intelligence. This calls for constant repetition of social skills, which can easily become boring and frustrating for our students. I am constantly searching for innovative and fun activities to incorporate into our social-emotional learning lessons. This has been made slightly more difficult with continued COVID-19 social distancing precautions.

Studies show that it takes approximately 400 repetitions to create a new synapse in the brain - unless it is done with play, in which case, it takes between 10-20 repetitions.

Each of the items requested will be used to continue to provide these engaging lessons throughout the rest of the school year. I am hoping to start incorporating collaborative puzzle video games into our lessons to encourage continued participation while maintaining student engagement. While we already have a Nintendo Switch to utilize these extra controllers will ensure all students can play simultaneously without the need to share controllers. The plastic straws will be used for a team building and problem solving marble run project. The foam tiles will be used to create a life-sized board game that can be customized to cover various topics the students learn about during SEL. The batteries and laminating sheets will help ensure the longevity and continued use of resources we already use with the students. The pop-it bracelets are a favorite fidget of our students and will be used to help students with emotional regulation.
