My Students

I am surrounded by resilience and creativity every day. My students inspire me. I am the only counselor in a K-5 school so I keep very busy. My students are very motivated but many struggle with getting basic needs met at home. One-hundred percent of them get free lunch and most of my parents work nights or two jobs to make ends meet. In addition, many do not speak English or very limited English and many are refugees. I deal daily with the kind of problems that stem from not getting basic needs met. In the midst of all this, I help children express themselves in ways that help them to build a core sense of self.

I learned a long time ago that a young child is likely to be more comfortable initially expressing himself with art than he is going to be at expressing emotions and feelings through words.

I stay in at recess and after school trying to keep up with all the needs of my students and after 11 years, I still truly love it.

My Project

Social Emotional lessons are important for student growth, but let's all face it, they can get boring. Help me to spice up my Social Emotional Learning curriculum and get students engaged in Social Emotional Learning. Teachers Pay Teachers is such an amazing resource and has been a god send when it comes to engaging kids in lessons and there are so many great ways to add to the curriculum with proven teacher and counselor designed resources that help engage kids and get them active and involved in their own learning.
