Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are preschool through 8th grade students living in a diverse urban neighborhood who attend a large public school receiving Title 1 funds. Many of my students are English Language Learners and/ or diverse learners. For many of my students this is their first opportunity to experience art.

For many, my classroom is an entry point into the visual arts.

This is their first opportunity to work with a variety of art materials (for example air dry clay, liquid watercolor paint, scratchboard). I strive to give them as many different kinds of experiences as possible to help them develop their creativity, art skills, and their own unique artistic voice. My art students LOVE to explore new art materials.

My Project

Help my young art students develop their creativity and their own artistic voice by exploring clay. Working with clay supports students’ emotional wellbeing. Clay is a very meditative and therapeutic material to work with which can be very calming for students who have experienced upheaval and uncertainty during the past year.

Working with clay supports students’ fine motor skill development, and gives students a chance to create 3D artwork.

It is so exciting to take something home that you have created to display or use. Many of my students like to tell me they still have and display work they created in art class several years ago! Having air dry clay and pottery tools will have a lasting impact on my students' art class experience this year.
